Built through SideDoors

Origin

A counter runs from 0 to 2,000 while a row of front doors stays shut. At 2,000 a side door swings open and light spills across the section.

Michael Innamorato in a green blazer and white t-shirt, with the New York City skyline behind him.

I applied to more than 2,000 jobs and got zero offers. Plenty of final rounds, which felt a lot like almost catching the Staten Island express bus.

No target school, no built-in network. First-generation, the son of immigrants who worked hard but could not make introductions. I studied computer science at SUNY Plattsburgh and kept doing the right things long past the point where it was obvious they were not built to work for someone like me.

So I stopped lining up at the front door. Everything since came through SideDoors.

Along the way I worked across enough fields that recruiters called me unfocused. The mix turned out to be the asset.

A tangled scribble under a light bulb straightens into a path, steps rise out of it and an arrow climbs through an opening door.

A claw machine for a friend who got bad news. Four plays, every one wins.

a little treat

Not all AI is bad.

A friend got bad news, so I built her a game. A helicopter flies in and drops off a tiny claw machine. She taps it, it grows, a song starts, and she gets four plays. Every play wins something I owe her: a coffee date, a pickleball date, Monza F1, unlimited shoulder rides.

One evening with Claude Code, on the same stack as this site. It lived at a hidden link on this domain until she had seen it, then it came down.

A full playthrough, 68 seconds. The recording is silent; the real page plays a song.
  • Helicopter intro and every prize hand-drawn as SVG
  • GSAP timelines, transform and opacity only
  • Handheld-style touch controller for phones, with haptics on Android
  • Progress saved on her phone, so a refresh never costs a play

A terminal types a build command, then a small keyboard draws itself line by line.

Built in a day with Claude Code. Every scene is hand-drawn SVG.

The portfolio is the proof.

I wrote the spec, then built the whole thing with Claude Code in a single day: Next.js 16, TypeScript, Tailwind, GSAP for every animation, Lenis for scroll, d3-force for the skills web.

No templates, no stock illustration, no Lottie files. All thirty-plus scenes are inline SVG drawn by hand and animated with transform and opacity only, so they run at 60 fps on a phone.

The contact form, newsletter signup and analytics are wired to real services. The copy lives in typed content files, so changing a fact never touches a component.

  • Next.js 16 App Router, fully static
  • GSAP 3 with DrawSVG, MorphSVG, MotionPath, Flip and SplitText
  • Lenis smooth scroll synced to ScrollTrigger
  • d3-force skills web
  • Resend and beehiiv through Server Actions
  • Lighthouse: 100 accessibility, 100 SEO, 100 best practices

Your team finds plenty of deals. It loses the ones nobody read the paper on.

CivicStack is the terms layer for public-sector sales: clause-level reading of the contracts that decide state, local and education deals, compared against what competitors signed.

My first wedge was tracking when government contracts expire. Six weeks of research showed a competitor already sold that for $500 a year, so I dropped it and went looking for what nobody had built.

An umbrella company, still running. ReviewMamdani and ReviewHochul are live under it, with ReviewAOC and ReviewPoliticians.com in development.

I built it alone on nights and weekends and launched for under $200: $20 for the domain and $100 for the first month of an AI subscription.

An agentic pipeline sources, fact-checks and sorts New York political news, with a human review step before anything publishes. It reaches 30K+ monthly users.
